Sports acrobatics joined USA Gymnastics, in 2002. Sports Acrobatics is projected to be an Olympic Sport in 2016. All competitions, teams, coaches and athletes in sports acrobatics are governed by the rules of, and are sanctioned / registered by the National Governing Body for competitive gymnastics. Sports acrobatics is a difficult discipline that combines gymnastics such as tumbling and floor gymnastic skills with balancing and acrobatic skills. Athletes in sports acrobatics are judged on aspects of balance (strength, flexibility and body control through pyramids and slow-motion acrobatic positions) and tempo (aerial moves, such as somersaults and twists that land on the floor or are caught by their base or partners) with aspects of dance, choreography and artistry. Athletes of all ages from 5 on can participate. Typically younger, smaller more flexible ones are the fearless flyers on the top, and older, taller, stronger ones are the powerful bases who lift, rocket launch and catch their flyers (high flight of partner tosses and tumbling passes). Athletes compete in the five disciplines (pairs or groups) of sports acrobatics: women’s pair, men’s pair, mixed pairs, women’s trios and men’s four. Athletes compete at many levels (1 – 10 and Elite) Competition starts at level 4 and advances to level 10. The best of the best, those at the Elite level, have a chance, based on scores and tryouts, of representing the United States as a member of the USA Gymnastics National Team. Continuing development and education in the skills and movements are required as each athlete advances levels (skill progression). Choreography, artistry, good sportsmanship, physical fitness, team building and building trust within pairs/groups are vital to teams competing in sports acrobatics.

It is recommended to wear clothing, like dance and yoga wear, that allows you to move without restriction. For aerials arts, clothing that covers the knees can make training more comfortable. No jewelry should be worn during class or clothing that could snag the silks or cause injury during training.
Generally shoes are not needed for classes. We do ask that students wear gym shoes for stilt walking and unicycle. Soft ballet shoes can also be used for tight wire walking.
